To me the purpose is to allow the patient to have the receptors filled and not need other opiates. This will allow them to get themselves off their drug of choice by changing their behavior and decision making. One of my responsibilities to the patient is to have them seeing a drug counsellor regularly and monitoring their progress. One big step of this is helping them regain self worth and self confidence. The addicted person has a low self esteem and confidence or a false self confidence.
I have found that helping the patient regain that is very important to a successful rehabilitation and recovery from the addiction.
