From SAMHSA Tip40, page 54: "Patients who are not physically dependent on opioids but who have a known history of opioid addiction, have failed other treatment modalities, and have a demonstrated need to cease the use of opioids, may be candidates for buprenorphine treatment. Patients in this catego...

No, I mean literally out of a job. The clinic that I work for has informed me that I will be replaced by "Practitioners" once they become certified. And they had the balls to tell me that my salary was a 'strain on their budget' and "practitioners" were cheaper. Well I hope they get what they pay fo...

medic2109, I don't know the answer to your question, but I just wanted to tell you that I am in the same boat as you. The ASAM really screwed Osteopathic Physicians by ostracizing us from the ranks of addiction treatment physicians! I have already lost a job promotion because I can't get certified!

We don't have any special procedures in my clinic for pregnant patient inductions other than using plain buprenorphine instead of the combination products. All inductions are in-clinic (outpatient). Logic is that any complications from the bup are still better than the patient using heroin.

And in their foresight in fighting the addiction epidemic, the ASAM/ABMS/AOA have now left NO pathway for Osteopathic residency trained physicians to get certified in Addiction Medicine. Way to go ASAM!

My view is this, until now the 'powers that be' didn't even think all physicians were qualifed to prescribe bup without special certification, but now all of a sudden any nurse with extra letters after his/her name is now qualified to treat addiction! And, yes, I agree that there are some irresponsi...
